About Mr Philip Charlesworth

Mr Philip Charlesworth, is a full-time Consultant Urological Surgeon based at The Royal Marsden Hospital, Chelsea, London.

He is highly specialised in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer (MRI-guided fusion biopsies, Da Vinci robotic prostatectomy). He is also one of highest volume surgeons in the UK performing operations with the use of the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, and has pioneered many novel robotic approaches (e.g. Retzius sparing, single-port, nerve-sparing techniques), and has a passion to improve functional outcomes for men having prostate cancer surgery, particularly with respect to continence, sexual function, and erection preservation. Additionally, he has been a pioneer of robotic Aquablation for men with enlarged prostates, and robotic cystectomy and intracorporeal bowel reconstruction for bladder cancer.

Mr Charlesworth undertook surgical training in NHS and military hospitals; he then proceeded to do a postgraduate degree in Molecular Genetics of Urological Malignancies at the University of Oxford. His Higher Speciality Training in surgical urology and uro-oncology focused on robotic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, open surgery for major urological cancers, and surgical reconstruction. He continued his education by working alongside Professor Indy Gill on the highly prestigious British Urological Foundation Robotic Preceptorship at the University of Southern California Institute of Urology, USA.

Over the past decade, he has performed over 1500 complex robotic major pelvic uro-oncological cancer procedures and is one of the busiest surgeons of his kind in the UK. He has held the position of Lead for major pelvic cancer operations for patients within the Royal Berkshire and South Oxfordshire NHS Trusts, prior to being invited to join the Royal Marsden fulltime in 2023.
